Skills for the Writing Module – Task 1

In task 1 of the Writing Module, you are given about 20 minutes to write a minimum of 150 words. You are asked to look at a diagram, table, graph or short piece of text and describe the information in your own words.

Follow the steps to write a well-structured report: –

Preparation (about 2 minutes). Pay attention to the following points:

Read the given information carefully and underline the important keywords.

Outline some points to compare and contrast the information.

Ensure that your ideas are arranged logically.

 

Writing (about 15 minutes)

Introductory sentence: – It explains what you are describing and will be from the given information.

Body Paragraphs:-In body paragraphs compare and contrast the information available. Use connectors to link ideas so that the thoughts move logically. You can write 2 body paragraphs. Remember you use an appropriate tense form.

Avoid the repetition of ideas and sentences.

 

Concluding sentence: – A simple concluding statement could include any of the following, where relevant:

Significant comments.

A potential solution.

An overall summary of the ideas.

Future implications.

 

Editing (about 2-3 minutes)

In the last few minutes check for mistakes.

Checklist for editing

I have written relevant information.

I have used accurate grammar.

I have used appropriate vocabulary.

I have used accurate spellings.

I have used connective words effectively to link the ideas.

I have not exceeded the word limit as the maximum words you can write for the task 1 is 170 words, exceeding the word limit will lead to negative marking

 

 

Skills for the Writing Module – Task 2

In task 2 of the Writing Module, you are given about 40 minutes to write a minimum of 250 words. You are asked to write an essay on a given topic in your own words.

Follow the steps to write a well-structured essay: –

Preparation: – Spend about 5-7 minutes for pre writing. There are 5 steps to be considered: –

Read the question carefully and underline all key instructions.

Think carefully about the topic.

Establish a point of view and list some points for introductory, body and conclusion paragraphs.

Arrange your points in a logical order.

 

Writing: –

Introductory paragraph: – The introduction should begin with a general statement or idea of your own which is based on the keywords marked and totally relevant. The last sentence of the Introduction should include a thesis statement, which shows the point of view or direction that will be detailed in the body paragraphs.

Body paragraphs: – In body paragraphs write all your points in logical way. Use connectors to link ideas so that the thoughts move logically. You can write 2-3 body paragraphs. Every point should be relevant to the topic. Try to give at least one relevant but not personal example to justify your point.

Avoid the repetition of ideas and sentences.

The conclusion: – Cover following points in conclusion

Indicate it as the end of your essay.

Give final thoughts and assessments on the essay subject.

Strengthen your thesis statement.

Give a potential solution.

Write conclusion related to the introduction.

 

Editing (about 3-5 minutes)

In the last few minutes’ check for mistakes.

Checklist for editing

I have written relevant information.

I have used accurate grammar.

I have used appropriate vocabulary.

I have used accurate spellings.

I have used connective words effectively to link the ideas.

I have supplied enough detailed information and sufficient examples or facts.

I have not exceeded the word limit as the maximum words we can write for the task 2 is 270 words, exceeding the word limit will lead to negative marking
